2010 A personal year in review: Better late then never

For me 2010 started off wet.  At the time I lived in Tofino so this was no big surprise.  Being known for having the largest rainfall in North American what else would you expect in winter.

It all began no different from any other year, work, work, work.  Having not headed off to the ski hills again i was continuing my position at the guest house.  With 2010 came the third year in my role there.  Front desk/office admin, truth have it the title was a glorified name for a front desk guy who made up the form emails.  I was jarred into this realization on various occasions throughout 2009.  Having recently become engaged and being at the ceiling of my job I was looking forward to 2010 bringing about change.

Change came in the form of a job offer from a big city hostel by the name of Ocean Island Inn.  Having been drawn in by guise of the big city and a new go at a stale job the fiancee and I were Victoria bound by late March.

Have you ever looked for a living arrangement in Victoria?  Let's just stay this was one of the more frustrating and challenging times for us to date in 2010.  This was no Tofino and we did not have the pick of the litter as per who we knew anymore.  We were fresh meat!  After staying where I worked for 3 agonizing weeks we found a place in downtown Victoria and were offered a house-sitting job for a friend to ride out the time till our new place was ready.  Did I mention that we still had a wedding to plan?

When not sightseeing or working wedding planning was in full swing.  The months before the wedding flew by and the wedding was suddenly upon us.  Having gone so smoothly so far hiccups were bound to happen.  First it was anticipated guests not being able to show up.  Next we had the MC bail to out to take up his "dream job" in New York.  It didn't get any better when a bridesmaid had her transportation cancelled due to a murder near her take off terminal.  In the end it all came to together and after a week of fun with friends new and old a few days into July I began the "MR" to the combo of Mr and Mrs William Cook.

With the pre and post wedding hoo hah out of the way it was time to finally settle in to our downtown condo.  With all the wedding hustle we apparently didn't find time to do all little things that make a new place home.  We had the time so we thought why not.  Having a wedding helped too as we had acquired all the this and that to get it done.

Feng shui taken care I was starting to notice my dough eyed look at my new work was starting wear off.  Having 7 bosses sharing a brain didn't help either.  No suggestions could liven this place up, nor would they take them.  Through the grapevine I heard no one with half a brain or a decent skill set stayed at this place long.  My revitalization of a boring job was going south fast the only the only thing that saved me was a few days a week I got to sit around and people watch all of my co-workers well pretending to perform maintenance on their computer.  Let's just say I learned a lot about my surroundings but I learned more was that I needed a new job and fast.  No longer could I be micro managed by this pack of monkeys.  By September I was unemployed but the wife had landed a great job with a local sports firm.

Unemployment didn't last long but I did grow rather fond of being a kept man.  My wife on the other hand would tell a different story.  A few weeks before my 33rd birthday I started a new job at a local tech firm.  Being away from the industry for some time I was eager to get back into the swing of things.  Let's just say the place is the right fit for me.  Having found a new group of co-workers who were just as much nerd as smart ass as I was I found myself right at home.  December 23rd I celebrated 3 mths in my new gig and from the looks of things I this could be the beginning of a great employment arrangment.

At the being of the year I questioned leaving Tofino for what was thought to be greener pastures. With every hurdle overcome after leaving I realized the road back to the big city or call it reality would be a rough one but it was a road I wanted to travel. Through partnership and the guidance and assistance of some great people this year turned out to be one of the best of my life.  Lets see what 2011 has to bring
