Lessons on turning your Kiwi into a Canadian

With only some 4 million plus in existence you first step is to find yourself a suitable one. Not all Kiwi's are made to be Canadian.

Skip the books, you know the nonsense ones you'll find in the book store's entitled "becoming a Canadian" or "how to be Canadian". None of these will get you anywhere, take it from a Canadian

Meet the parents. This sounds weird but your starting to head down the right path.

Two words-work permit. Although hard to believe Kiwi's are not all fun and games. For a Kiwi to be truly happy and stay in Canada a job should soon come. Besides, every vacation must come to and end.

Build on your time together. I know it sounds cheesy. Parade your Kiwi around, show him or her all your part of Canada has to offer. It never hurts to be living in one of the most amazing places in Canada either. No, I'm not taking about Ontario ladies and gentlemen. The more your Kiwi likes what they see the more he or she will like the possibilities of staying on a more permanent basis.

Get married. No its not a joke and won't work on every instance. Some will try, many will fail. Its all in the timing or maybe its the way your make your proposal(inside joke), anyways back to the story. Hard to believe but even marriage won't make your Kiwi a Canadian.

Start planning. News flash! Work permits run out and once they do there are few ways to keep your little Kiwi here in the great white north. Its time to start looking at the options. Your Kiwi can't just become a Canadian citizen ya know.

In comes permanent residency, your savior! Your kiwi won't quite be a Canadian but free to move around, in or out of the worlds second largest country. Living the dream! Time is now of the essence.

Your now onto the paperwork phase. Now don't do as I did and print out all 1000 pages and then procrastinate for 3 months. Get er done! Fun, fun, fun, start soon and you'll be done.

Now before you mail off your masterpiece of information wonder you gotta pay the big bucks. Some $1000 later and your Kiwi still isn't a Canadian but the paper trail is moving along.

Now for the waiting, and waiting, and waiting......oops I feel asleep. Where was I? Did I mention there's and interview portion to this whole ordeal?

Stay tuned.
